Short definition
An extra security layer that requires a second confirmation at login besides the password, e.g. a code on your phone.
Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second security layer to the account. Besides the password, login must be confirmed with a second factor — for example an app code, SMS or bank link.
Even if someone knows your password, they can’t access the account without the second factor. It’s a simple and effective way to protect the account.
Which factors exist
Two-factor authentication combines two different kinds of proof: something you know (a password) and something you have (a phone, a hardware key) or something you are (a fingerprint). The most common variants:
- Authenticator app code. The app generates a six-digit code based on the time, valid for a short period (Wikipedia: time-based one-time password). It also works without mobile coverage.
- SMS code. Convenient but weaker: if someone takes over your SIM card, the code reaches the attacker.
- Smart-ID or bank link. Smart-ID requires a smart device and a PIN, so it is already effectively two-factor.
- Backup codes. Store them securely outside your phone, otherwise losing the phone can lock you out of the account.
What matters most on a casino account
An attacker usually wants either to take over the account or to change the withdrawal details. Protect your e-mail account first, because password resets go through it, and enable 2FA there. At the casino, check whether 2FA can be turned on, and use a unique password you do not use elsewhere. Also check that changing withdrawal details requires fresh confirmation.
Common mistakes
- Entering a code on a page whose address you did not check. Phishing pages ask for codes in real time, so watch the domain (SSL encryption alone does not prove it).
- Sharing a code with someone who calls "on behalf of the casino". Genuine support does not ask for your one-time code.
- Treating 2FA and KYC as the same thing. 2FA protects the login, KYC establishes your identity.
- Mixing up 2FA and a crypto wallet recovery phrase: never tell the latter to anyone (seed phrase).

Is 2FA mandatory?
Not always, but strongly recommended. Many casinos and bank links use it by default to protect login and withdrawals.
What if I lose my phone?
Most services offer backup codes or alternative confirmation methods. Keep backup codes safe right when setting up 2FA.
