An identity check a casino uses to securely verify the account and withdrawals and to prevent money laundering.
KYC, or know your customer, means the casino may request documents to confirm a player's identity, address or source of payment. This is usually done to protect the account, prevent money laundering and approve withdrawals.
How smoothly this check runs is often an important part of a casino's overall user experience.
KYC is usually done before the first withdrawal, after larger amounts, or when something looks suspicious. Behind it is anti-money-laundering regulation: under EU Directive 2015/849, providers of gambling services must identify their customers, and in Estonia this applies through the Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Prevention Act. The directive text is available at EUR-Lex: Directive 2015/849, and you can read about Estonia's financial intelligence unit at fiu.ee. The exact requirement depends on the casino and the amount, so read the casino's terms.
You are usually asked for an identity document, proof of address (typically a utility bill or bank statement from the last few months) and, if needed, proof of the payment method, for example a card with the middle digits covered. For large amounts, proof of the source of funds may also be requested. These things go wrong most often:
Upload documents only in the casino's official account, not by email or a messaging app unless the casino requires it. Also check that the page really is the casino's own.
Under European data protection rules you have the right to ask what data the casino holds about you and for how long. If you complete KYC before your first withdrawal, you do not lose time when a win comes. Pay N Play simplifies getting the data from the bank, but follow-up questions are still possible. More detailed guidance is on the pages KYC check at withdrawal and KYC documents at a casino. Pangakasiinod.ee covers the process in KYC and identity verification. For the legal background of unverified casinos see no-KYC casinos and Estonian law and the term licence.
Example: before a first withdrawal the casino may ask for a copy of an ID document and proof of address. Submitting documents in advance speeds up the later withdrawal.
The casino requests an identity document and often proof of address.
If needed, ownership of the payment method is also confirmed.
The casino verifies the data and confirms the account.
After confirmation withdrawals go smoothly.
KYC is a legal requirement for anti-money-laundering and account protection. It confirms that the withdrawal goes to the right person.
The first check can take a little time. Submitting documents in advance after registration keeps later withdrawals fast.
